Marble Thresholds and Saddles: How to Choose

carra marble threshold

A marble threshold (also called a saddle or door sill) bridges the gap under a door, separating tile from carpet or wood and sealing wet areas like bathrooms. We fabricate and stock thresholds in four materials, dozens of sizes, and every common bevel — cut to order at our New Jersey shop and shipped nationwide.

What materials are marble thresholds made from?

Marble — White Carrara, Crema Marfil, Nero Marquina, Bianco Dolomiti and Calacatta Gold; the classic choice for bathrooms and doorways. Granite — Black Absolute; the hardest-wearing option for heavy foot traffic. Travertine — warm, earthy tones for rustic interiors. Engineered quartz — Pure White and Grey Caesarstone; uniform color with zero veining variation.

What sizes do marble thresholds come in?

Standard widths run 2 to 6 inches, lengths 24 to 36 inches, in the standard 3/4-inch thickness — with longer pieces and 1 1/4-inch thickness available. Need something exact? Every threshold can be custom cut to your measurements.

Which bevel and finish should you choose?

Choose a standard bevel for a clean square profile, or a single or double Hollywood bevel — the long, sloped edge that eases transitions for wheelchairs, strollers and bare feet and helps meet ADA accessibility guidelines (see our FAQ on ADA compliance below). Finishes: polished for a bright, reflective surface or honed for a matte, slip-friendlier feel in wet areas.

Why is Carrara marble our bestseller?

Quarried in Carrara, Italy, this white-to-blue-gray stone with soft veining has been the architect’s default for centuries. It pairs with nearly any tile, wears well in daily use, and costs less than rarer stones — which is why White Carrara thresholds are our most ordered line.

Marble Saddles in Custom and Standard Sizes

Marble saddles — also sold as door saddles or threshold saddles — are the same product under a different name: a flat, beveled strip of stone installed under a door or at a shower entry. Contractors in New York and New Jersey typically say “saddle”; tile shops elsewhere say “threshold.” Whatever you call it, we stock marble saddles in every standard door width, fabricate custom sizes in about a week, and ship them crated. Popular picks: White Carrara saddles for bathrooms, Black Absolute granite saddles for entry doors, and double-Hollywood marble saddles for ADA-friendly transitions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a marble threshold (door saddle)?

A marble threshold, also called a door saddle, is a solid stone strip set in a doorway where two floors meet. It covers the joint, finishes the edge of the tile, and with a beveled edge eases a small height difference between the floors.

Do you make custom sizes?

Yes. Stock thresholds are 24, 30 or 36 inches long, 3 to 6 inches wide and 3/4 inch thick. Longer, wider or 1-1/4 inch thick pieces are cut to order in our Jersey City shop, usually about 50% more than the nearest stock size ($100 to $385). Send your measurements and we confirm the specs before we cut.

Which edge profiles are available?

Three: Standard bevel (a 1/4 inch chamfer on one long edge), Single Hollywood (a long slope on one long edge) and Double Hollywood (sloped on both long edges). Other profiles can be quoted on request.

What finishes can I choose?

Polished (glossy) or honed (matte). Pick the one that matches your tile.

How do I measure for a threshold?

Measure the doorway from jamb to jamb: that is the threshold length (stock 24, 30 or 36 inches). Then measure the depth of the door frame, or the gap you need to cover: that is the width (3 to 6 inches). Note the height difference between the two floors so we can suggest the bevel. Our measuring guide shows each step.

Are marble thresholds ADA-compliant?

They can be. The 2010 ADA Standards (section 404.2.5) allow a doorway threshold up to 1/2 inch high, and any part above 1/4 inch must be beveled no steeper than 1:2. A Single or Double Hollywood bevel is the usual way to meet that. Tell us both floor heights and we recommend a profile.

Do you offer samples?

Yes. Sample pieces are available so you can review color, veining, and finish before ordering.

What are typical lead times and shipping options?

Stock pieces ship in 3 to 4 business days by UPS Ground and take 1 to 5 business days in transit, crated, to the 48 contiguous states and DC (no Alaska or Hawaii). Shipping is a flat $70 per piece, or pick up free at our Jersey City, NJ shop. Tracking is emailed when it ships; for custom pieces we confirm the date with the specs.

How do I install and care for a marble threshold?

Dry-fit first, then set it on a flat, clean substrate in thin-set mortar or a stone adhesive and grout or caulk the joints. Clean with a pH-neutral cleaner. Reseal when water darkens the stone instead of beading on it.

What is your return and damage policy for custom pieces?

Stock items can be returned within 3 days of delivery, with a 25% restocking fee and return shipping paid by the buyer. Custom-cut pieces are final sale. If anything arrives damaged, email us photos right away and we arrange a replacement.
